Suwannee

In early November on a sunny, warm day, we took a drive to Suwannee. This small town is located near the point where the famous river of the same name empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The town’s secluded surroundings make Suwannee a popular haven for boaters and outdoorsmen. Among the popular activities in the area are fishing, canoeing/kayaking, scalloping, and viewing the many birds & wildlife strolling amongst the salt marshes and nearby islands.

Suwannee serves as the starting point for boating trails leading into the neighboring Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge and southern starting point for the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, a boating trail which runs for about 170 miles up the famous river to the town of White Springs in northern Florida.

From Old Town, follow CR349 south for about 23 miles to reach the town. Unlike most of the places we visit, the best way to view the Suwannee area is by boat. However, we were able to catch a glimpse of the River by taking SE 205 Street which loops around the town. If you’re a boater, there are a couple of marinas in town offering good quality service.
