Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station Museum

One of the most interesting historical sites we have seen in Florida. At 175 feet, the lighthouse is the tallest in Florida and second tallest in the United States. 203 steps lead to the gallery deck. Its light is a 1000-watt lamp. Besides the lighthouse which was completed in 1887, there are the houses of the principal keeper, first assistant, and second assistant. Each house provides historical information and a peek into what life was like in the lighthouse’s early years. The Lens Exhibit displays a collection of lighthouse lenses which seem more like fascinating works of art. Several other buildings add to the historical picture. A quarter-mile nature trail winds through a coastal hardwood hammock.

The lighthouse is located south of Daytona Beach near the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the website below for detailed directions, hours of operation, and admission rates. This is a great place for family and school field trips. For children, pick up a treasure hunt handout at the gift shop. Have fun!
