Crystal River Achaeological State Park

In early November we visited Crystal River Achaeological State Park in Crystal River. After viewing artifacts at the museum/visitor’s center, we strolled along the ¾ mile paved trail winding through ancient burial mounds, temple mounds, and a sifting exhibit. Tall palms and shade trees dot the picnic area which extends to the beautiful, peaceful Crystal River.

Nearby are the Crystal River Preserve State Park and the St Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve where several hiking trails wander through a variety of scenery including scrubby flatwoods and marsh hammocks. If you have the time, this is an excellent way to experience the real Florida on foot. Hiking is not the only way to experience the real Florida at the park. Tours are also available with the Ancient River Dwellers Heritage-Eco boat tours. Schedules and information can be found at the Crystal River Preserve State Park website. Don’t miss the visitor’s center’s dioramas and aquariums.

All parks are located off US Highway 19 in Citrus County. For specific directions and more detailed information visit the websites listed below.
