Torreya State Park
Some fondly refer to Torreya State Park as “the mountains of Florida” and those who stroll down the trail to the shore of the Apalachicola River will understand how the park got its nickname. The river trail provides a close up look at Florida hammocks as it gently descends to the river’s edge where beautiful scenery awaits. The climb back up to Gregory House, an 1849 plantation home, will give the feel that one is in the mountains. Confederate cannon emplacements are scattered along the heights. Exposed roots and constructed steps help hikers in their ascent.
Visitors can sit on white benches in front of the Gregory House and drink in the beauty of the river scene below. Tours of the house begin at 10:00 a.m. on weekdays and at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. on weekends and state holidays.
We visited the park in late November when the air was cool and the humidity low.
