Micanopy
Micanopy is a quiet, cozy town nestled beneath graceful, shady branches of ancient oaks. Street signs hint at the history of the town with names like Okehumpkee, Eestaulkee, Ogehoee, and Cholokka. Micanopy (Mik-a-no-pe) bears the name of the Seminole Nation’s chief during the second Seminole War. Dating back to 1821, it is Florida’s oldest inland settlement. It’s located about nine miles south of Gainesville, off US 441. Coming from Gainesville, turn right onto CR234. From the south, turn left onto SE 165th Avenue. From I75 take exit 374 to CR234 and follow the signs to Micanopy. Whichever entrance we take, we always feel that we traveled back in time a hundred years.
Our most recent visit to Micanopy took place on April 4, 2008. The day was sunny with a pleasant temperature. Behind the storefronts of historic buildings, quaint shops filled with antiques, books, and more enticed us to browse. Other sites caught our attention as you will see as you browse our photo album. Perhaps our photos will entice you to spend a few hours in this hidden treasure.
