Falling Waters State Park
Florida’s highest waterfall is found at Falling Waters State Park. Water descends 73 feet into one of several sinkholes located in the park. Boardwalks lead to the falls and other sinkholes. It’s impressive if you’ve never been inside a sinkhole. We went on a hot summer day so the waterfall was not flowing at full capacity. Still, we’ve never been inside a sinkhole so it was interesting. The trails are mostly boardwalks so it’s easy walking.
Falling Waters is also the site of one of the first attempts to drill for oil in Florida. During the year 1919, a group of businessmen drilled a well here believing they would find a large quantity of oil that could be harvested and sold. In 1921 and after drilling to a depth of 4912 feet, only a small amount of oil was found so the well was capped a short time later.
Falling Waters is located near Chipley and cost $5.00 by the car. The park offers a lake where swimming and fishing are allowed. A picnic area and camp ground are also available.
