Canaveral National Seashore

Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, Canaveral National Seashore is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Florida. We spent a wonderful January afternoon exploring all it has to offer.

Our first stop was Turtle Mound, a large shell mound dating back to the Timucuan Indians. Board walkways crossing over the mound lead to the top where a panoramic view of the landscape and the beach can be seen.

Apollo Beach

After a stop at the Visitor Center, we headed to Apollo Beach, parking lot 2. (Several parking lots provide access to the beach.) The view of ocean waves clambering to shore was breathtaking.

Eldora

Our next stop was Eldora. There we strolled down a shady lane to Mosquito Lagoon where fishermen were fishing from the dock. We turned into the path leading to the museum located in the Eldora State House, a restored home built during the time of steamboats and early railroads.

Seminole Rest

The next morning we stopped at Seminole Rest located in Oak Hill off Highway 1. Seminole Rest provides another example of a shell mound. Two homes, dating from the early 1900s, stand as bright yellow sentries amidst cedars, palms, and ancient oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Visitors with cameras will most certainly stop to take photos of the uniquely twisted trees that line the walkway and the peaceful, flowing Indian River strewn with early morning fishing boats.

After stopping here, we headed South to visit the nearby Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
