Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park

Sinkholes are not unusual in Florida, but few of them provide such an up close opportunity to explore them. Located in Gainesville, Florida, Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park allows visitors to study the development of a sinkhole and its effect on the land. As the boardwalk descends slowly into the 120’ depth of the sinkhole, visitors gain insight as they enjoy the Millhopper’s natural beauty. Sounds of gently flowing streams accompany visitors on their way down the 232 steps. Several overlooks give visitors time to catch their breath, take photos, and study the flora.

We went late one morning in early October. The sky was blue and the air cool—a perfect day. It took a little over an hour to walk the nature trail and go to the bottom of the sinkhole. We took our time, enjoying the sights and sounds.
