Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge

In the late 1800s several houses of refuge were established along Florida’s east coast. Built in 1876, Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge is the only one left. Here survivors of shipwrecks could find refuge. For almost seventy years keepers walked the shore looking for those who needed rescuing from the Atlantic’s rough waters.

Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge is located at 301 S.E. MacArthur Boulevard east of Stuart, Florida.
