Fort Pickens

Fort Pickens, along with three other forts, was constructed 1829-1834 to defend Pensacola Bay. Situated on the Gulf of Mexico, the fort and adjacent batteries were used until 1947. Though the fort did not see much action except during the Civil War, the complex, along with nearby Fort Barrancas, provide an important part of America’s defense history. It is a well-preserved monument to the men who endured great hardship to build it and to those who were stationed there.

Visit in the spring or late fall. Summer is hot, hot, hot at Ft. Pickens, to which the men who served here could attest.
